Sunday Funday Couples Golf at Darlington Country Club

Every Summer Sunday afternoon mixed couples can be seen golfing and laughing together at the Darlington Country Club. Couples gather from the first Sunday in June through the end of August for golf, camaraderie, and fun. No serious golf allowed.

For many years the members of Darlington Country Club had occasional Sunday afternoon Mixed Couple fun events (2-Ball foursomes) as well as various mixed couples leagues. These were both social events and were a great way to get to know other members. The Sunday outings were fun outings while the leagues required more serious and competitive golf.

For these leagues, teams were set up and if a team could not be there one week, a substitute team was needed. Over the years, as people got busier and busier, substitutes were hard to find. Members enjoyed the camaraderie and fun of mixed couples golf, but didn’t always want to be tied down to being there each week or appreciate the serious golf involved. They were looking for an alternative.

Thus, Sunday Funday Couples Golf was born. About ten years ago, it was decided to take the fun golfing outing idea and hold it weekly instead of occasionally. Mary Jo Riechers, volunteered to be the commissioner and looked for some fun games to play. After looking at what several other clubs were doing, searching online, and taking input from other golfers, she came up with several fun games to play. Some games are 2 person games and some are 4 person games and are fun for all levels of golfer to play.

Each week, after couples have signed up, the game is decided upon, couples are paired with other couples to golf and groups are sent out. Mary Jo mixes it up so golfers get to play with different couples each week. There is a nominal fee ($5 per couple), for flag and other prizes which are awarded the following week. At least one golfer of the couple must be a member of DCC and sign up between 2:20 and 2:45 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Couples are sent out starting at 3:00 p.m. and play 9 holes of golf. Most golfers stay and socialize for a while after golf. It is a great way to get to know other golfers.

Many of our golfers have been playing Sunday Funday Couples golf since it started in 2013. Mary Jo & Doug Riechers continue as the Commissioners and welcome new golfers anytime. Golfers do not have to be here every week and can join us whichever Sundays work for them.
